A dentist with several years experience as an associate decided he wanted to create a dental practice where he could provide a significantly better level of dental treatment to his patients – in a welcoming environment. Like many young dentists, his first port of call was to the high street bank – who provided him with generic information and then asked him to complete a stack of paperwork to complete. Having never prepared cash flow projections or given much thought to the marketing aspects of the business – he found this to be daunting and entered a phase of procrastination.
Frustration finally got the better of him and he called Pree to see if he could help!
Using a structured system, Pree quickly established the reasons that the client wanted to go into business for himself.
Pree takes up the story, "The first thing we did was have a ‘reality check’ on what is actually involved in setting up and running a successful dental business – from this, it became clear to the client in which areas he would need support in - particularly: developing outstanding communication skills with patients and staff and creating a systems manual to deliver the same brilliant results each time (whether serving coffee to patients or placing several implants!).
"After agreeing on the pre-requisites of a highly successful and profitable dental business, we were able to prioritise the key areas that needed to be addressed:
1. Financing – I was able to negotiate an attractive rate with the lender after helping my client to produce cash flow projections and a meaningful (compelling) business plan with targets and timescales for achieving them and then helping present these to the bank in a professional manner...
2. Property - The client had already located a property for conversion to a dental practice. I made enquiries with local agents to ensure the price that had been agreed upon was attractive and that an un-necessary premium was not being paid...
3. Infrastructure - Guidance was then provided to ensure the architect and builders were clear on what was expected of them, by when and for how much. The timescales were adhered to rigorously and a close eye kept on the agreed budget so as not to over-spend...
4. Communication - Team meetings were held in advance of the doors being opened to patients to ensure everyone was ‘aligned’ and understood the philosophy and vision of the dentist (now a proprietor & principal!)
5. Systems - These were put in place to monitor the number of new patients coming though the door, the outgoings of the business, the areas of marketing that were working well, the allocation of time for the clinician (i.e. administrative vs clinical) etc. These continue to be tweaked in accordance with the growth of the practice.
The Result – a profitable dental practice which now focuses on delivering high quality dental care in a comfortable, energetic environment – with systems to ensure consistency of results and exceptional care of patients. The team are fulfilled and motivated - and with our input and encouragement, they have produced written their own personal growth plans."
Together the client an Pree are now taking the business to the next level and are working on the creation of a new Core Values Programme.
